Clarks Hill Lake
Preview: Clarks Hill Lake is one of the largest inland bodies of water in the South. With 71,535 acres of water, the lake offers almost unlimited angling opportunities for a variety of species. Clarks Hill Lake officially known as the J. Strom Thurmond Project, stretches 40 miles up the Savannah River valley and 26 miles up the Little River valley. The 1,200-mile shoreline is covered with mixed pine and hardwood and more than 100 islands dot the lake's surface. Clarks Hill sees heavy use but its size allows plenty of room to spread out and find your own honey hole. Access to the lake is excellent, with more than 30 access points on the Georgia side. The lake is well marked for navigation. Clarks Hill anglers reportedly invented "Carolina-rigging" a soft-plastic bait. Since it is steadily retrieved right along the bottom, a Carolina rig covers a lot of water, and is a great way to fish expansive points and flats, of which Clarks Hill has plenty. Like most older lakes, the basin was almost compl |

J. Strom Thurmond Lake (GA / SC Border)
Preview: Short Take: 70,000 acres; two major river tributaries, rock and/or clay points, hydrilla. Although J. Strom Thurmond Lake has occasionally suffered through an identity crisis due to both name changes as well as incorrect spelling-originally named Clark Hill, often spelled Clarks Hill (the name of a town at the dam), and then given a federal name change to J. Strom Thurmond Lake to honor the South Carolina Senator-the lake's fishing has had no such problems. The 70,000-acre Savannah River impoundment has been known for both its largemouth and hybrid striped bass fishing for many years, and the largemouth fishing has actually improved due to the spread of aquatic vegetation like hydrilla and elodea. The lake is the largest Corps of Engineers project east of the Mississippi River and one of the 10 most visited Corps lakes in the nation. Located just a short distance from Augusta, Thurmond Lake offers a quiet change from the fast-paced life of the city. The Sumter National Forest covers mu |

Lake Jackson
Preview: Created in 1911 with the closing of Lloyd Shoals Dam on the Ocmulgee River, 4,750-acre Lake Jackson is the oldest major reservoir in Georgia. The lake is very fertile, and up through the 1970s, Lake Jackson was one of the hardest-fished reservoirs in Georgia. Lake Jackson was constructed by the Central Georgia Power Company. After a 1928 consolidation of power companies, the lake came under the auspices of today's Georgia Power Company. The lake is operated as a hydropower reservoir and is part of Georgia Power's Central Georgia Hydro Group. The waters of the Yellow, Alcovy, and South rivers join in the lake. Below Lake Jackson's Lloyd Shoals Dam, the waters leaving the lake become the Ocmulgee River. Since flood control is not one of Lake Jackson's primary duties, the lake's water level usually varies only 3 to 4 feet throughout the year. The lowest water is from December to March. Since Jackson is an old reservoir, the bottom is heavily silted and little of the original cover remains |

Lake Oconee
Preview: Georgia Power's Lake Oconee is the second-largest lake found entirely within Georgia and is very popular with anglers and boaters alike. Impounded in 1979, Oconee is also one of the youngest reservoirs in the state. Lake Oconee sprawls across 18,791 acres with 374 miles of shoreline and impounds the Oconee River. "Oconee" is a Creek Indian word meaning "great waters." Since it is one of the most popular lakes in Georgia, development is heavy on some parts of the lake. In contrast though, a good portion of the lake lies within the bounds of the Oconee National Forest, and is virtually undeveloped. When the lake basin was cleared, construction crews removed most of the timber. Some large stands escaped the saw, and others were topped out 10 feet below full pool. The lake bottom is mostly clay with plenty of rocky outcroppings. Very little aquatic vegetation grows in Oconee. Oconee is a consistent year-round producer. Although the lake has produced largemouth bass weighing more than 12 po |

Lake Richard B. Russell
Preview: Georgia's newest large reservoir, Lake Richard B. Russell reached its full pool of 26,650 acres in December 1994. The reservoir is an USACE multipurpose project on the Savannah River in Georgia's Piedmont region. Best way to fish: boat, shore. Because Lake Russell is managed for fish and wildlife and is undeveloped, it escapes much of the boat traffic that Georgia anglers are so familiar with on other reservoirs. Lake Russell impounds the Savannah River and the Rocky River. About 25 miles of the lake's Savannah River arm is part of the Georgia-South Carolina border. The Rocky River flows into Lake Russell from Lake Secession in South Carolina. The needs of fish and anglers were kept in mind during the construction of the lake. Some forested areas were left standing, and thousands of acres of trees were topped at 12 to 35 feet below normal pool level. The cutting pattern left a ring around the lake from the shoreline out to about the 30-foot depth that is mostly free of trees, but angle |

Lake Hartwell
Preview: Lake Hartwell is a 55,950-acre USACE reservoir on the Savannah River in northeast Georgia. The lake receives moderate fishing pressure and is good angling for largemouth bass, crappie, and other species. Situated 7 miles below the point where the Tugaloo and Seneca rivers come together to form the Savannah River, Hartwell Dam impounds 55,950 acres of water for power generation, flood control, and recreation. The lake stretches 49 miles up the Tugaloo River valley and extends 45 miles up the Seneca River valley into South Carolina. Hartwell Dam is an amazing 3 miles long, with the concrete portion measuring 1,900 feet and rising 204 feet above the riverbed. The entire project encompasses 76,450 acres of land and water. The topography around Lake Hartwell transitions from Piedmont-type terrain on its lower end to rugged foothill country on the upper end. The lake's shoreline has some development, but most of the backdrop is forested hillsides. If you could look below the lake's surface, |
